Volvo Air Motion Exploded View 355x177 Volvo Air Motion ConceptFor the “1,000-pound car” brief LA Design Challenge 2010, the California-based Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center (VMCC) presented the proposal for air Canyon Carver, a design study for a futuristic sports car running on the open air. The carbon fiber body takes inspiration from Scandinavian design heritage and is “carved like a shell.”
Aiming to minimize weight and complexity while maximizing driving pleasure, the Volvo Air Motion Concept is driven by simple compressed air motors. These engines cool under load, instead of heat, eliminating the need for heavy cooling systems. An integrated approach to the chassis interior and suspension design also contributes to overall efficiency.
The air required for the air tank is centrally mounted using compressed air refueling sites, which are equipped with wind turbines air floating 1,000 feet in the air.
